Ayaan Hirsi-Ali is a Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the Founder of The AHA Foundation, a women’s rights organization. She served as a Member of Parliament for the VVD (People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy) in the Netherlands. Hirsi-Ali was the screenwriter of Submission, a film about the oppression of women in conservative Islamic cultures and has authored several books including her memoir, Infidel.

“What will it take to prevent the Arab Spring from turning into an Arab Winter?”
Recent months have shown that the “Arab Spring” does not guarantee a swift and peaceful transition to democratic rule that is protective of human rights and guided by liberal principles. The optimism that prevailed among many at the start of the revolt has made way to concern and clearer thinking. The regional earthquake paved the way for the rise of political Islam, but its performance at the helm of power has so far been disappointing. Is it possible to prevent the “Arab Spring” from turning into the “Arab Winter”, and if so, how?
